Songboy3 aka Frank H. Carter III is one of the finest vocalists at ccmixter.org. His vocal tracks are both inspiring and excellent, and to have access to them and be able to create new musical works with them is a real treat.

I'd been wanting to do something with this for some time, and had no excuses yesterday as I was recording the latest Cool Music show. For this, I recorded 2 tracks of 1-take live beater Sigma guitar, a DI track with my P-Bass, and a whole bunch of hummin backing harmony vocal tracks. With the song itself being such a classic traditional piece, and with Frank's beautiful interpretation, I didn't really want to clutter it up with too much, or detract from his vocal track.

New remix I posted recently featuring the wonderful vocals of Jacinda Espinosa. Actually, it's more like I worked up a simple acoustic arrangement based on her vocal track. I made some minor changes, like where the bridge comes in, but i more or less kept it intact. Recorded with my beater Sigma acoustic into a large diaphragm condenser, as well as with a P-bass direct in to an MBox/ProTools.

Ciggiburns is a dynamite english singer and one of ccmixter's best kept secrets. My nickname for her is "the voice". I know, it's unoriginal but it's the first thing I think when I hear her sing. She also does great radio promos. I've been wanting to remix her for some time, so I took CiggiBurn's vocals into the far depths of MIDI space with "Small Back Room - The Space Station mix".

The Fair Use Meme Goes Mainstream

Interesting stuff taking place with regards to one Shepard Fairey, whose ubiquitous poster of Barack Obama has become such a cultural phenom, it's being reinterpreted from all different angles by thousands of people. This process is nothing new for Fairey, a well known street artist whose reputation is checkered by charges of plagerism and unoriginality. Andy Warhol probably ran into similar criticisms as an artist, yet in retrospect, is today hailed as a pioneering artist and cultural icon. So one could argue the similarities between Warhol and Fairey, and argue that this type of "fair use" has been going on for quite some time.

Jasper Johns earned his legacy by lifting the national icon. Or Roy Lichtenstein, whose work hangs in the most important art museums in the world. Lichtenstein used oil and Magna paint in his best known works, such as Drowning Girl (1963), which was appropriated from the lead story in DC Comics' Secret Hearts #83. (Drowning Girl now hangs in the Museum of Modern Art, New York).

This plays right into Larry Lessig's view of the remix. It's obvious to even the most casual observer that Fairey's poster was "inspired" by the photograph. Perhaps it was the composition, or it could have actually just been the ability to capture that exact moment with Obama that made that photo inspire Fairey to create his poster. But his poster definitely "reinvents" the photo, or perhaps a better word would be "the image" (and the photo just happened to capture the original image). In that sense, Fairey appropriated, and added artistic value to the image.

Also nice to see Dr. Lessig is on it.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that this huge cultural phenom is now going to be discussed in broader terms than just how cool the poster is. It will bring the debate into the mainstream in a manner that can be understood by the masses, and debate on this is a good thing. It's time for a larger discussion of intellectual property reform as technology enables more open, easy, and free widespread distribution of ideas.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights

This month over on Remixfight, we are featuring remixes of David Barnes reading "The Universal Declaration of Human Rights", the ground-breaking document ratified by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948. It defines the fundamental rights of individuals, and exhorts all governments to protect these rights. The UN has translated the document into over three hundred languages and dialects. David Barnes is a frequent contributor to LibriVox, an amazing online resource that is reproducing many of the world's most important written documents from the public domain into spoken word tracks available without licensing restriction through LibriVox. Check out the remixes and please share the link and spread the word. The Olympics take place next week in Beijing and the timing for this could not be more appropriate. Cool Music

I'm going to start doing a weekly virtual radio show which will highlight my favorite tracks over on ccmixter. It seems like so much gets submitted these days, it's hard to keep track of it all since it gets lost and buried kind of quickly. So each week, I'm going to go back through the past week's submissions and share my favorites. They might not be the best for everybody but they're the best I came up with, and I'm hoping to also try to highlight the wide diversity of the artists there, and show how all styles and genres of music are accepted and embraced.

So I had this Britney pella laying around and I was bored so I did a bit of googling and found the bpm and decided to throw some drums and bass behind it. Then I found this sample pack by Bucky Jonson of the Black Eyed Peas and took the acoustic guitar track and made it electric, and added some his cool trumpet samples in the bridge.

Lies

Lies is one of my latest remixes of a track of the same name by Trifonic, who released their recent album into the CC domain. Some really nice vocal work by Amelia June on this.

I also took the vocals and a bit more from one of their other tracks, "Good Enough", and did a mash-up with the guitar track from Narva 9's "Walk On", and also integrating part's of the Walk On vocal line as a bridge. Walk on by your side also features a bit of Brad Sucks doing some lala drone work.

Finally, I threw a nice little piece together featuring some really good stems from Admiral Bob, with a bit of c.layne vocal work as icing. Enjoy Admiral Bob on the Bridge.

Albert Hofmann Remixfight

Dr. Albert Hofmann, who passed away yesterday, was a Swiss scientist best known for having been the first to synthesize, ingest and communicate the strong hallucinogenic effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD). Hofmann authored more than 100 scientific articles and wrote a number of books, including “LSD: My Problem Child”. The speech he gave called “LSD and the Nature of Reality” was presented before the international conference “Hallucinogens, Shamanism and Modern Life” in San Francisco on the afternoon of Saturday, September 30, 1978. We're going to remix it this month on Remixfight! and you're invited to join us.

One of my remixes made it on to their recent compilation Anaxagoras. "Caught by the Hard Moonlight" features a couple friends from ccmixter, the words and vocals of Omni Vista and guitar from HC-7.

I've kind of stepped in and taken over the admin duties at Remixfight!, mostly because I refuse to see it die a slow and painful death. Again. When it first began, it suffered from a lack of administrative oversight after the first few fights, and I stepped in and took it over. This was around 2004. Collectively, we (the community) brought it back from the brink. Then, we got hacked by some malicious virus that took the site down, and Future Boy rebuilt it into what it looks like today. He put in his time, and now I'm back to putting in mine.

This month, we're featuring The Grammar Club, a bunch of really talented guys, some of whom are friends of mine and some of whom I've never met but seem like cool and talented guys. You can remix their new song Balloon Flight by getting the source files here. Go grab some grammar club and cuss like a sailor!

A Flurry of Activity

It's funny how inspired one becomes after having their ability to create music compromised by a broken pair of headphones. My old pair literally spent thousands of hours on top of my head, and they are by far the most comfortable headphones I've ever owned. So I bought another pair and went straight to work.

I've got another Jay-Z remix wrapped up for my zzmixter project. This one features 4nsic trading flow with Jay, backing mix by me. A public service announcement about what is hip hop.

I've also got a remix by Calendar Girl, whose stuff I'm just discovering to be very good. I'm a bit late on July, but I intend to try to work a couple more months in there at some point.

I also threw together a little mix called Taking My Place, which features vocals by Etherdust, beats by Pat Chilla, and cello and synth by rjmarshall, all featured artists from ccmixter.

Finally, I did a couple of mixes which feature Frank H. Carter III, a very talented vocalist from ccmixter. Check out both Magic and Crazy Love, with vocals by FHCIII and backing music by me.

New Jay-Z remix. My backing mix under his acappella vocal track for "What More Can I Say". I sliced his vocals up slightly to try to better fit the beat. This one was kind of challenging because the chorus vocals were part of the vocal track so I couldn't separate them out from Jay's vocals. Oh well, you work with what you got.

I created a new tune/mix for the upcoming Songfight. Challenged to do something with a "strong, dancable rhythm", my MC Jack persona took over on this one. Sugar Shaker features a short clip from KCentric, from the ccmixter community. The rest of the backing mix and vocals are a combination of loops and live tracks by me.

I've also got another new mix over on Remixfight. Kind of a last minute thing I wanted to do as my buddy Ken is the drummer. You can hear it here.

I've been on kind of an extended hiatus from remixing lately, partly from a lack of inspiration, partly because i've just been pretty busy with life in general, and partly because i've been trying to concentrate a little more on songwriting and live recording. I haven't abandoned it, just taking a well earned rest in the hopes that i can come back juiced with some new ideas about stuff.

I did manage to squeeze in a remix on the current Remixfight though. "Music Ruined Video Games" is a remix of an original song by Shael Riley.

I guess LonelyGirl15 must like my remixes, as she (they?) used another one for her latest video. Here, her fake boyfriend "Daniel" discusses Aleister Crowley while my remix of Brad Sucks "Work Out Fine" plays intermittently in the background. This one was posted yesterday.

I mean, I'm not complaining about the publicity (the last video she used my remix in had over a quarter of a million hits), or the Creative Artists Agency connection (feel free to contact me about future work...), so feel free to keep using my mixes there "Bree", but man, I just don't get it. I must be too old for this shit.

Another one of my remixes found it's way onto YouTube recently. Rohan Harris, an independent filmaker from Australia (i think), recently used my remix of Brad Sucks "Borderline" for the trailer for his new short. Apparently, he also used my remix of Spinning Merkaba (Mammoth) for the closing credits of the film. he posted the trailer on YouTube. See below.

LonelyGirl15 and I

A recent article in USA Today, as well as the LA Times, confirms the recent phenomenon known as LonelyGirl15, a YouTube blogger that seems to have captured the fancy of a voyeuristic world. LonelyGirl15 puts together these shamelessly stupid videos, but she's so damn cute and endearing, with her big doe eyes, that you just think "oh, how cute..." instead of "oh, how stupid....".

Anyways, i'm sure you're wondering why i'm talking about this. It's because LonelyGirl15 somehow stumbled across my music and is using my remix of Grant Schindler's "Remained" in one of her dumb videos. I think they might have stumbled on it from ccmixter, as I think there are a couple other ccmixter mixes she uses in her videos. She's also apparently the number one downloaded video host on YouTube.

One of the articles mentions a possible CAA connection, so if anyone from CAA wants to contact me about future work opportunities, my email link is there on the right.

I did 2 new remixes today that I think turned out pretty good. The first one was the latest Remixfight!, which I was originally going to sit out not because I didn't like the source material, but more a lack of time and energy. I threw something together in a couple hours this morning while I had my coffee. Some people like their sunday paper, I like my sunday morning remix. :)

So the MC is kind of a misnomer in my moniker as I really don't rap, just more or less remix and produce under this name. But I do mash, so I guess calling myself a mashter of ceremonies isn't too far off. Speaking of mash, I've got a whole bunch of new mashups posted on ccmixter. I've been doing alot of remixing lately, I guess just inspired by alot of the source I've been working with. Lots of different styles and genres keeps things interesting. So with that said, here we go......

Fly features vocals by Spinning Merkaba. He also provided the acoustic and clean electric guitar on this. I did the rest of the music. This one rocks hard.

Nada is a remix of "NadaNada" by SilviaO, a pop singer from Columbia. Vocals by SilviaO and music by me. Very well received on ccmixter.

Remained is a pretty straight forward remix of "Remain", a song by Grant Schindler. Only his original source tracks were used in this remix, which i really like.

Sex and Payola features a whole bunch ccmixter artists including ran dumb dots, dreamfilter, V.E.R.A., and nimmo.

Diplomacy features Clarance Boddyker rapping over some Pat Chilla the Beat Gorilla, with some added strings by rjmarshall.

Speaking of awesome, the awesome teru also took some of my naked source material and threw together a nice little mashup of me and Brad Sucks. Very cool.

And speaking of mashups, I threw together a big old mashup featuring ccmixter artists alundryn, hepepe, ztutz, and teru. Deeply Mashed features only the original source tracks, so i added nothing in terms of new material, just re-arranged and remixed the original tracks. Enjoy.

Apollo Nove is a Brazilian songwriter and producer, whose tracks I remixed for the Crammed contest on ccmixter. I stuck to entirely his original source tracks for my remix "Apollo's Creed"

I also put together a new mashup that features most of the original source music for Brad Suck's "Making Me Nervous" but instead of Brad's vocal track I swapped it for this death metal stream-of-consciousness vocal track by Mortoray. So instead of making me nervous, it's making me angry.

I've been spending a fair amount of time lately over on ccmixter, mostly because i think it's one of the best resources for open source music on the internet, and it's got a real cool community of like minded people. I've taken some of their source and worked up some new remixes with a number of artists there.

Slamlord gets things going, featuring vocals by Teru, with lo tag blanco kicking in some fine horn, beats, and synth tracks, and Lisa Rein bringing her excellent backing vocals. this was fun to do.

Strange Little Sunrise is a little mashup i threw together featuring the vocal work of Diane Jessurun with some of Future Boy's source tracks from "Strange Little World".

I was trying to go theatrical with Choose Valsinha which features a nice track by Gerador Zero with an a cappella vocal track by Ran Dumb Dots.

I got news from my friend Dr. Kongbalong that my Future Boy remix was one of the select few to make his follow-up EP to his excellent "A Maze of Death" CD. Check it out on his website. I also gave Ms. Vybe another flip, giving her "A Little More Sunshine".

Another new remix over on Remixfight! It's a remix of a track called "Voice of the People" by The Snyder Conglomerate, a local slug from the Cruz. Most of my remix is made up from his original source, and I added another GWB sample I had leftover from fight 10. I also threw it for a figurative loop by adding a buddhist chant track I found. “Buddha Vandana - Homage to the Buddha” recited by Venerable Indaratana Maha Thera.

Well, things are looking a bit grim on the remix horizon lately. I found out the Beastie Boys aren't going to be releasing their weekly acapellas to feed my acrapella jones, so that project may go on hiatus for awhile. 21 remixes is pretty good though, so i'm not complaining by any means, but i'll miss them. I've got at least one more i'm about half way done with, and there are still a couple that are released which I haven't done. It might be a good time for a beastie break though.

I also found out remixfight is going through a flux state server change thing, which might affect a couple remixes i've done lately so i'm just going to post them here and say happy new year and enjoy the latest remixes i've done. The first is by Mostly Harmless and is appropriately named "The Vishnu Recyle", which features the talents of a couple guys named Puce and Plat. The second remix is something I did as part of some bigger ongoing project which I think might still be happening, but I'm pretty clueless about this one. I know it's being organized by some guy named Aaron Ackerson. I'm not clueless at all about the mix I did for it, which I think turned out pretty good. The mix is called "10 Pounds of Love".

I also remixed a track by DJ Lang, which features a rap artist named J. Gomes. I just decided to name the remix after him as I admired his braggadacio and felt he earned it. You can check out "J. Gomes" below.

Looking for Missing Relatives

"The Past Didn't Go Anywhere" was a collaborative project put out a few years ago by Ani Difranco and Utah Phillips, and once I heard the CD, I was hooked. It really opened my eyes to the artist that is Utah Philips, a storyteller, folksinger, and man of the people. It inspired me to try something like what Ani Difranco did, so I searched around and found a short monologue/intro that he did somewhere years ago. Then i tried to create a mix that blended elements of hip hop, funk, and country. All elements I sort of associate with Utah Phillips. It's been a while since I've posted anything but not for a lack of effort in production. I've got a short remix of a song called "Virus" by The Silverback over on Remixfight! I wish I'd had more time to work on it, but I think it came out ok. I also did a remix of a Bill Berry song called "The problem from the start" where i used a loop sample that was named "adrian_yeah" (or something like that), which inspired me to throw together a Rocky inspired remix that uses a bunch of samples from various Rocky movies.

I also worked up a couple of loop based tunes for Songfight! recently under different guises. "Don't break my heart again George Lucas" was submitted under the name "The Jet Eye" and features the vocal stylings of my buddy from the great white north, The Hip Cola. I also tried to set a theme by using various samples of Jar Jar Binks, arguably the most annoying thing to ever come out of George's brain. Finally, I also took my first foray into the world of mashups by taking 2 songs by internet rockstar Brad Sucks and pureeing them into a Pasty White Man rapfest. Luco Brazzi sleeps with the fishes tonight.

I remixed a tune by Lanark called "El Efecto Ovni" for the current remixfight. I thought it came out pretty nicely. I broke my self imposed rule of staying within the loopset and added a bunch of keyboard tracks to supplement the loops i used. I also rveresed a few of the loops as well, and created a new drumkit in Reason. You can hear my remix here or you can check out all the remixes for this fight here.

I've also got another remix that's pretty much done for Bill Berry. I'll post that in due time.

I've got a couple new remixes posted up over on Remixfight! I did 2 different versions of a song called "Piano Keys" by DJ RedShirt, a remixfight stalwart. His tune is an instrumental track so to shake things up a bit, I really threw one mix into left field with a Topol inspired version I dubbed "fiddler on a goof". I've been having fun with fiddle samples lately, which I liberally and gratuitously used throughout this remix. But I did use a number of original samples, including the main bassline, select keys, and synth. The other remix I did features a number of samples I got from ccmixter.org.

I've also done 3 versions of the upcoming obscurity remixfight which should be posted sometime around the first of March. I'll post the links to them at that time. I really enjoyed working on the obscurity remix. Great mix and great vocals by JB.

The Iron Clef makes a rare appearance, flagrantly disregarding the ethics of commercial-for-profit-music-ideology by paying homage in his own special way to Iron Chef Chen Kenichi. Asparagus Battle is completely made up from vocal clips from the actual Iron Chef "asparagus battle" episode, music samples from the show, and drum programming the Iron Clef created in Reason.

My remix is pretty standard fare for me, fairly true to the original loopset with the exception of the drums, which i replaced entirely. I've been working on this Chuck D. remix. (Chuck D is the legendary founder of Public Enemy). I like what i've come up with but i'm still making minor tweeks here and there. anyway, i made a version that uses samples of Flava Flav that i thought came out pretty good. but then i realized that i couldn't use the Flav samples as i hadn't gotten Flav's permission, which would disqualify me out of the contest. so i muted the flav stuff for the final version but you can hear the full Flaved version here. enjoy and feel free to leave me any feedback.
